Staff Spotlight: Meet Our Head Brewer Eric!
Rohrbach Brewing Company is built on the idea of good people making great beer for Upstate New York. Every can, bottle, and pint of Rohrbach beer that is enjoyed is crafted by our amazing brew crew staff. As we continue to release new and exciting small-batch brews, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to also highlight the great people who create them! Each month, our DOBO (Director of Brewing Operations), Joel, gives his team the ability to make something unique and exciting solely based off what they want to brew and share. Our latest small-batch release, Daz Good Italian Pilsner comes from the mind of our Head Brewer, Eric!
So Eric, how long have you been working at Rohrbach and what is your role in the brewery?
Crazy, but I have been here over 13 years now. As Head Brewer I do a little of everything: yeast harvesting, tank sanitizing, manage brewing operations, organizing, etc. and supporting Joel in any way he needs. If anyone is ever out, I can jump in and do whatever needs to be done that day.
Kind of like Mr. Do It All?
Haha you could say that. Jack of all trades, master of none – learning new stuff all the time!
What brought you to Rohrbach and how did you end up working here?
Became a homebrewer of sorts in college, finding a loophole in the law where although I couldn’t buy beer yet, I could buy a kit at 18 and make my own. It’s been a passion of mine ever since. Worked at Wagner Valley B.C. as an intern and finally found an opening with Rohrbachs.
What made you want to make this beer?
In general, Italian Pilsners need more recognition and I wanted to create something emphasizing European hops. It is super light and refreshing and is a little different than a traditional Pilsner.
Oooo, Fancy! What kind of food do you picture enjoying with this brew?
I would imagine eating it with lighter summer foods like a fresh salad, any white fish, or accompanying a summer picnic. The European hops give it a refreshingly spicy, earthy character that compliment such meals.
Yum! That sounds amazing. If you were to close your eyes and take a sip of this beer, where would you be transported?
*closes eyes* Hmmm, I would say I’m outside on a bright summer day by the pool or lake.
What are some of your favorite memories over the years at Rohrbach or things that stand out to you while being here?
Wow, there are so many memories over the years. The first thing that comes to mind is getting to work with some outstanding brewers over the years. Giants in the industry like Dean Jones, Mike Stahlbrodt, Jim McDermott and Joel. Wouldn’t be who I am without them!
What do you look forward to everyday while working here and what keeps you excited to keep making great beer?
Being a part of an ever-evolving industry. Enjoying shift drinks after work and getting to work alongside ‘Brasky’ and fellow co-workers. All the little day to day things that happen when you get to make great beer all day with your friends is a good time. It’s a rewarding career in many aspects.
Well thanks so much Eric for talking with me. The beer is delicious, I can’t wait for people to try it!
Cheers!/Salute!
